Category: City Issues.

Third time is a charm, or is it?

On Wednesday I went to city hall to file for the election and everyone was gone.  On Thursday I went to city hall to try again and the wonderful Mrs. Tillie informed me that the day before all the women went to a late lunch and I had missed them. She tells me that Tracy, the best city clerk ever, was at a conference and they will need to call her to find out what to do.  Tracy will be back on Monday, also the last day to file, and hopefully I will be successful.

Kevin Newman will be running for Position 1 of Bellaire City Council

I do look at things as they happen and maybe this is a sign?  For the last few weeks when I explained to people why there was no use in running for City Council now, it became more clear that I had to run.  I need to bring up the issues no one will talk about.  I AM the choice people can VOTE for who want change and are tired of the Status Quo.

It seems residents of Bellaire are tired of feeling like their hard earned tax dollars are being wasted.
It seems residents want to know what really happens in the city and where the money is really spent.
It seems people want accountability and need someone to hold Bellaire responsible.

We need to actually promote Bellaire SMALL business and stop just saying they do.
We need to stop this super elitism that I see more and more in Council meetings towards business and homes that do not fit their standards.

City Council should represent all residents and the last original residents are not being served.  Some of us actually like living in our original houses from the 1950s.

I am not a part of the Bellaire establishment and have no plans on joining. I am a businessman who cares about BELLAIRE and  is tired of what he sees. I am not a politician and I just want to be a voice for other like-minded residents who are not currently represented.

Are you next? Crime is happening everyday in Bellaire.

One thing I will push as a member of the Bellaire City Council is to improve the police department.

Are you next? Is your car going to be the next one broken into?  Crime is happening everyday in Bellaire.  We need to hire more police and improve moral and retention and provide competitive incentives to retain and attract the BEST officers.

Below is the weekly crime report. NOTICE the ** at the bottom. These are not even the full crime stats.  An extra patrol officer could have prevented these break ins.

You might say, How can 1 extra police officer patrolling the city be everywhere?  When you add in the on duty police cars driving around it creates a complete police presence. Criminals driving around the city will see the police cars and know the police are out and ready to stop criminals.  Lets reward the officers for doing their jobs and not find reasons to make them want to watch the clock.

Here is the crime report.

Kid after my own heart. Make the City use local businesses first.

I was walking on the Newcastle Trail and saw this flyer on the stop sign.  I try my best to always support every Bellaire business and if I thought he had a way to get to my house I would hire him to do my yard.

One thing that really bothers me is when City Council says they are pro business.  I feel this is the FURTHEST FROM THE TRUTH!  It seems as long as they want your business they are for it, otherwise go to Houston.

If elected I want to push a mandate that all City purchases are offered to any local business first. We need to support the small business owner who grinds it out everyday trying to add to the quality of life to all Bellaire residents.  I don’t care if it takes you an extra hour or an entire day to source the goods or services, lets keep the money in the City and make sure the small, local business owners can survive.

How about the catering goes to a local business, police car maintenance goes to a local mechanic, cakes are made by the local baker?  Simple things that will help everyone prosper.

Baha’i Faith of Bellaire presentation at the Parks Board for structure donation.

Last night at the Parks Board meeting Hormoz Bastani representing the Baha’i Faith gave a presentation on the possible donation of a Pavilion to a City of Bellaire park system in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the founding of their religion.  It was interesting to learn something new, as most of us at the meeting didn’t even know this religion existed and there was a community in Bellaire.

The structure would be made of stainless steel and has 9 points representing the essential worth of all religions, and the unity and equality of all people.  The structure would be roughly 10 feet tall and 18 foot wide, with benches around the circumference as a place for reflection and meditation.

Pedestrian safety at Evelyn’s park, how safe are we?

It is always amazing to me when a 10 million dollar project overlooks the most basic item, pedestrian safety.  On opening day I walked from my house on Newcastle down the trail for opening events.  I had known already that Newcastle would be shut down so for that day I wasn’t worried about getting hit by a car.  There were police on every corner directing traffic and it couldn’t have been safer.

The problem is walking to Evelyn’s park is dangerous. I have started walking the trail daily and crossing Bellaire is always my concern.  8 lanes of traffic, cars all in a hurry to go nowhere.  Walking everyday I have seen people at all hours of the day and have seen what people have to do to cross the street.  If you are walking southbound on Newcastle when you get to Town Oaks Pl you can see how far Bellaire is vs just walking across the street and you can walk in the park through the driveway entrance.  When you walk on Newcastle southbound, you see what amounts to a wall made of plants and flowers.  Once you walk you have no choice other to go all the way down to Bellaire and then try to cross at the crosswalk.  If you are walking you want the easiest way into the park and that is to skip the crosswalk.  This leaves crossing over at Live Oak and then finding the grass roped off and a sign saying keep of the grass, walking through the plants, or to Bellaire.  The easiest way is to just add a crosswalk and sidewalk.

I took some pictures watching how the women and small children are forced to cross Newcastle where there is no crosswalk at Camila.

There is no sidewalk on the east side of Newcastle and people have to walk in the grass, if it isnt roped off.  It seems the people living around the park can create their own laws and attempt to prevent people from LAWFULLY parking on a PUBLIC street.

It boggles my mind that the owner on the corner feels he is better than everyone else and can place cones blocking the public street and the public easement.

It seems after the crime scene tape was brought up at the last city council meeting it was moved back to what seems to be his property line. Then the owner put up this sign.  It says, “Please do not walk on the grass. The sign was on the city easement side. It has now been moved onto his property line, off the concrete.  It creates issues where people want to respect the home owner, but they want to be safe.  The sign and tape should be removed immediately.

For some reason they haven’t been removed and I am amazed every time I walk past this.  On the other side of the street there are fancy signs that look official that say no parking, ON A PUBLIC STREET. These need to be removed as well.

The illegal blocking of public roadways needs to be stopped immediately! There needs to be a sidewalk installed from Acacia to the park and there should be a crosswalk installed like at Evergreen park for pedestrian crossing.  They also need to re-stripe the crosswalk at Bellaire in all directions. The lines are faded and older lines are still showing and it is hard to distinguish where the walk area is.

Monday should be quite the show, between this and dogs it should be a fun night. See you there.
