Everyday should be a learning experience

Everyday should be a learning experience

Having the right to vote is something I feel most people take for granted.  Most people will not go vote, do not care about the election, and overall do not feel it is something they should spend their time on.  If the people who gave their life fighting for getting EVERYONE the right to vote could see how low voter turn out is they would probably have given up the fight.

Going to Fondren Middle School in 1984 I remember we did a project on the Presidential election.  I saved it all these years and it was kept at my parents house in my old closest.  It was in an orange 2 pocket folder, the ones with brads.  This was also the time when they taught us to climb under the desk in case of a nuclear attack.  Being a 12-year-old in the 84 the election was a big deal.  In class we learn about the Electoral College and how our vote really does not elect the President and we come to believe our vote does not matter.  In this ELECTION on November 3rd, every vote matters and with voter turn out painfully low I am guessing that not more 1000 people will show at the polls to vote.  I try to learn from every adventure I go on, I try to look at every event in my life and learn from it.  This election is no different.

I reached out to the Principal of Bellaire High School (mmcdonou@houstonisd.org) and the Dean of Students at Episcopal High School (mnewton@ehshouston.org) asking if they had a government class that was discussing the election.  I felt this election would be the PERFECT example of how your vote does count and to see democracy in action.  I was amazed that I did not even get a reply.  I thought that having a candidate for Bellaire City Council want to come in and make the class apart of his campaign would be accepted with open arms, I was wrong.  I guess this is part of the larger problem that no one really cares about anything unless they have to.

Thankfully I care about Bellaire and I want to be on the City Council. I want to make a difference.  Contact me if you want to make a difference and together we can do it.   kevin@politician.com

DO we really want people on the corner with a sign begging for money in Bellaire?

I am back at my favorite corner, Bissonnet and 610, looking out and what do I see?  There is a man in a bright orange shirt, holding a sign walking into traffic.  At 2:16PM the Bellaire Police were called and this person was reported as a traffic hazard with a full description of what he was wearing and what he was doing. It is now 3:08 and there is so no police units responding to the call.  A Public Work’s vehicle was seen at the corner and should have reported it as well.

I am for anyone trying to make a living, but do we really want people begging for money on the corner in Bellaire?  This is the exact definition of my restore the “aura” to Bellaire.  As I am writing this there is still no unit and we are coming up to a 1 hour call time.  I do understand this is not the highest priority call, but he is walking in and out of traffic and when he gets hit by a car it will become a major accident.

Once elected I want to make sure this type of thing does NOT happen.  I want to investigate why any call in Bellaire takes over 1 hour for a response regardless the priority.  My source is sending me updated information and the man is currently walking into the street and still no police interaction and it is going on 70 minutes.  I want to fix the broken police department and this is just one example of something that should never even be an issue.  Just think how often things like this happen all over Bellaire, every day?

Learn about Bellaire City Council Candidate Mary Michael Fife

http://www.michaelfife.com/

Mary Michael Fife, a resident of Town Oaks Place in Bellaire, filed as a candidate Monday for the special election that will be held November 3 to fill the unexpired term of Place 5 City Councilman Andrew Friedberg.

Fife has not been a previous member of a city board or commission. She was recently asked by Mayor Phil Nauert to serve on the Ad Hoc Committee advising the city on the site and design for the new city hall, policestation and municipal court.

She did address the city council in July, 2012, about the concerns of her neighbors about the development of Evelyn’s Park.

Although Fife expressed gratitude to the Rubenstein Foundation for donating the nearly 5-acre tract to the city of Bellaire, she and her neighbors raised questions about whether there would be adequate parking at the new park.

The Evelyn’s Park Conservancy and the city of Bellaire have an agreement with Bellaire United Methodist Church to allow parking at the church — across Bellaire Blvd. from the park.

Some nearby residents have, however, recently expressed frustration that some park visitors have been parking on the residential streets.

Fife said she has become an “enthusiastic supporter” of the new park.

She has one son and is the proud grandmother of three young grandsons.

A retired oncology social worker, Fife has been a resident of Bellaire for 33 years. She and her husband, Dr. Creighton L. Edwards, is an oncologist at Baylor College of Medicine.

HEB is one step closer, gets ordinance repealed and receives land for free.

vote for kevin newman for bellaire city council

With the full council present, the previous ordinance passed agreeing to sell the easements needed to rebuild the HEB on cedar, was repealed and a new ordinance was passed 6-1 with Gus Pappas voting no,.to give the land to the owner of the shopping center the land for free.  This free land was offered for sale for $175,000.00 at 75% of the appraised value.  HEB said no and a special closed session was convened to discuss the reversal of the ordinance and creation of the ordinance giving the land for free.

Roman Reed made a point to mention that this was Bellaire’s attempt at proving Bellaire wants to work with businesses and spur economic growth. I would agree with that if the location was vacant and we actually brought new business to the city.  Bellaire is a flagship and HEB gains having a location in our city as much as we gain from being able to shop in a new, modern store.

Coming into this election there are many events and actions already in motion.  The rebuilding of HEB is one of these things.  I am missing many facts and can only speak to what I have read so far.  The traffic generated from this store will push Bissonnet to its limits and the surrounding area will feel the effect of the extra traffic.  I do feel the increased traffic will help Spruce and Cedar as the constant flow of traffic will allow new businesses to move in.  I hope we extend the same courtesies of economic development to all the new businesses.

I wonder if we still have the Elm speed bump distributor on speed dial for when Locust complains people are cutting through?  Don’t forget to go vote in the Bellaire General Election on November 3rd.  Vote For Kevin Newman for Bellaire City Council
