Would you pay $2500.00 for this? Is this a waste of taxpayers money?

For the past two years the utility boxes in Bellaire have been painted with designs, with more done each year.  For two years the City of Bellaire has been paying 2500.00 for each box to get painted.  This seems very expensive to me.

When the program first started I spoke in front of the Cultural Arts Board and gave them my idea. How about you give each box to one of the schools in the city and let the art department in each school design and paint a design on the box. Best of all it would be free. Let the schools rotate boxes each year if needed and let the kids of Bellaire create public art.  They did not seem to like that idea so they went and paid people to air brush them instead.

I walk past this owl everyday on the corner of Evergreen and Newcastle and to me it looks like a 3rd grader did it. This is what I would expect from the box if Condit designed it.  This picture was taken as I was walking and is not the best. Click on it and you can see the airbrush quality vs not the fine art look.

WHY doesn’t the City of Bellaire utilize the free resources of the people of Bellaire. WHY does it insist on spending money when there are other alternatives. OH, did you know the cost was  $10,000.00 forthe Evelyn’s Park boxes, but the city didn’t pay for that.
